CHAPTER 18
While the three roommates had breakfast, Thomas announced, “I’m having lunch with Maria and her family today.”
“So, the date last night went well?” Anna asked looking at her brother’s smiling face.
“It did. The crush I had on her is back. We danced together and it felt so natural.” He glanced at Gerda before continuing. “I’m nervous to meet her father. He wasn’t at the dance, but her mother seemed nice,” he said with a shrug.
Anna rested her hand on Thomas’s hand. “I’m happy for you, Thomas. You deserve to find happiness.”
Thomas smiled and rested his other hand on his sister’s hand. “You do too, Anna.”
Thomas couldn’t see the smile that Gerda wore while watching her. “I am happy, Thomas. Very happy,” she said looking at the blue eyes watching her.
Thomas furrowed his eyebrow. “Do you like someone?”
“No,” she answered quickly and watched the smile leave Gerda’s face. “If you’re happy, then I’m happy.” Anna watched as Gerda got up and put her plate in the sink. She then left the room leaving them alone. Knowing she hurt Gerda with her denial, she quickly cleaned up the kitchen and followed Gerda into the living room. As soon as Anna heard the bathroom door close, she turned and looked at Gerda. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. “I hate that I have to deny our relationship.” She waited for Gerda to say something. When she didn’t, she continued, “I don’t think Thomas would understand.” Gerda finally nodded. “I love you, Gerda. Please don’t ever think that I don’t.”
Gerda let out a long breath. “I know you do, but I wish I we could tell him why you are happy. Tell him why I am so happy to have you in my life. How much I love you.”
“I want that too, Gerda. Please believe that.”
“I do. I’m sorry for being such a baby about this.”
Thomas appeared dressed to go out. “What are you to going to do today?”
“Rest,” Anna said quickly.
Thomas shrugged. “I’ll see you both later.”
“Have a good time and don’t worry about meeting her father. You’ll do fine, Thomas.”
He smiled. “Thanks.”
The apartment was quiet once Thomas had left. Anna moved closer to Gerda on the sofa and took her hand. She stared at the blue eyes that showed so much love and wondered how she could go the rest of her life with no one knowing how much she loved this woman.
*
Thomas came back to the apartment at six o’clock. The smile he wore was bigger than when he left. “I assume the lunch went well?” Anna asked, but knew already based on the way her brother looked.
“It did. Her father was so different than when I met him in high school. I told him about the store and the sandwich delivery we started.” He turned to Gerda. “Gerda, he said we should add his plant to our deliveries. He thinks we can sell a lot of sandwiches there.”
“Thomas, that plant is two miles from here. That’s too far for Gerda,” Anna insisted.
